Canna have traditionally been grown as middle and background plants in mixed borders. The advent of miniature canna varieties means that beds can now be devoted soley to cannas, with the Cannova Series, and other miniatures, being grown at the front, with medium, tall and giants providibng the border background.
As the miniature varieties do not have to spend a vast amount of energy in growth, they have the delightful habit of flowering as early as April in the warmest climates, but normally in May in most of Europe and North America. This means that flower beds devioted totally to cannas will flower throughout the late spring, summer and well into Autumn, i.e. the whole gardening season in northern climes.
